Morphological variation of Stephanodiscus niagarae Ehrenb. (Bacillariophyta) in a Lake Ontario sediment core
نویسنده
چکیده
Stephanodiscus niagarae populations in a core from Lake Ontario show systematic variation in radial puncta number and mean valve diameter. Puncta number is stable in specimens from samples deposited between 1720 and 1844. Puncta number gradually increases in samples deposited between 1860 and 1947, then increases rapidly to high numbers in samples deposited after 1964. Mean valve diameter is relatively high in specimens from samples deposited between 1720 and 1959. Diameter of specimens deposited during this period fluctuates around a mean of 63.2 #m. Mean diameter of specimens deposited from 1959 to 1980 is only 42.5 #m. We conclude that the trend in puncta number reflects the time course of eutrophication in Lake Ontario. We interpret the precipitous decline in mean diameter as an indication that conditions .in the lake after the late 1950's did not permit sexual reproduction in this species.

Response of a Lake Michigan coastal lake to anthropogenic catchment disturbance
A paleolimnological investigation of post-European sediments in a Lake Michigan coastal lake was used to examine the response of Lower Herring Lake to anthropogenic impacts and its role as a processor of watershed inputs. We also compare the timing of this response with that of Lake Michigan to examine the role of marginal lakes as ‘early warning’ indicators of potential changes in the larger c...
متن کاملObservations on the Valve Morphology of Stephanodiscus Niagarae
Stephanodiscus niagarae Ehr. was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Material for study was collected from Green Bay, Lake Michigan, Wisconsin, and Yellowstone Lake, Wyoming. Features of the valve visible in light microscopy (LM) but best defined by SEM and TEM include spines, arrangement of marginal and central strutted processes, labiate p...
متن کاملMorphology and taxonomy of Stephanodiscus vestibulis sp. nov. (Bacillariophyta)
A new species Stephanodiscus vestibulis is described from an eutrophic, hardwater habitat in western North America. Under the light microscope it resembles. and has perhaps been confused with, certain other small species of the genus. Structural features of the valve resolved by SEM, however, show that it is unique. The new species is particularly characterized by arch-like vestibules over the ...
متن کاملReconstruction the climatic changes of the last 600 years in Southeast Iran, study area, the Lake Sardarya, Taftan Volcano
Introduction: In order to recognize the mechanism of local climatic settings and to be able to establish the future climatic scenarios is essential to understand the past climatic and environmental conditions of the each area. This is also important to explore the response of local areas to the global climatic variations. The palaeoclimate researches carried out in Iran mainly considered the g...
متن کاملLake-based magnetic mapping of contaminated sediment distribution, Hamilton Harbour, Lake Ontario, Canada
The remediation of toxic sediment in harbours and urban waterways requires detailed mapping of contaminated sediment distribution and thickness. Conventional methods rely on interpolation of pollutant concentrations from widely spaced core samples but can lead to significant errors in estimating sediment distribution. An improved approach, as demonstrated by recent work in Hamilton Harbour in L...
